Prior to His crucifixion, Jesus shared a final meal with his close followers. This mean is now known as “The Last Supper” and is honored in a famous painting by Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci in one of his most famous works. The Last Supper is celebrated by many Christians on the Thursday before Good Friday called Maundy Thursday.
The basis of The Last Supper forms the Eucharist which is known now as Holy Communion. All four canonical Gospels state that the Las Supper took place at the end of the week just after Jesus entered into Jerusalem.
At the Last Supper, Jesus sits with his closest followers and mentions that one of them will eventually betray Jesus and to forgive the betrayal. Jesus builds the Eucharist institution by stating that the bread he breaks for his followers as “This is my body which is given to you”.
He also tells them to add a sacred commandment to “love each other as I have loved you.” Following the Last Supper, Jesus and a few of his followers travel to the garden at Gethsemane where Jesus is then arrested and eventually crucified.
