According to the ancient gospels, Jesus and his followers went out to the garden of Gethsemane following the dinner known as the Last Supper. This garden is still maintained two millennia later and sits on the edge of the Kidron Valley.
Jesus is said to have prayed in the garden to ask God that the burden He carried be lifted from Him and not to undergo the events that were to follow.
He did tell God that He would follow His wishes and in doing so, an angel descended and gave courage to Jesus who then returned to his followers in the garden.
Jesus found them sleeping and He chastised them for not praying to avoid temptation while He was away.
At this point in history, Judas gave Jesus the kiss that identified him to the officers that were sent to the garden to arrest Him.
One of Jesus followers, Simon Peter tried to defend Jesus by cutting off one of the guards ears with a sword. Jesus criticized the act, healed the ear with His touch and condemned Simon Peter with the words “those that live by the sword, shall die by the sword.”
